Newborn Photography FAQs

There is nothing quite like the first weeks in a newborn baby’s life. Never again will the features of your little one change so quickly. Newborn Photography is a specialty that captures the details of a new baby’s journey in life and the beginning of a new family’s journey together. This is a priceless and fleeting time to be savored and cherished for years to come with professional fine art photographs.

We absolutely love working with these precious little beings and their families … soothing and patiently posing their little ward in the most gentle and endearing ways. They love what they do and get quite attached to the little ones and their families after spending this special time together.

Yet as parents you have lots of doubts, questions, queries and concerns related to your newborn baby photo session. The below section we cater most of your questions. If you still have any more questions please feel free to get in touch with us at memories@newbornphotography.in and we will be more than happy to answer all your questions.

When should I schedule my newborn photo session?
The key to having a successful newborn photography and achieving those “sleepy, curled up poses” is to have us photograph your newborn within the first 10 days of life.  Newborns tend to sleep less and are difficult to “curl up” and pose once they reach the 10 day mark.  That being said, we have photographed some stunning images of newborns and babies at later stages, up to a month old.

How far in advance should I schedule my newborn photo session?
We encourage families to book their newborn photography session at least a minimum of a month before the baby is due.  Your “due date” will be placed on our calendar and we will be looking forward to hearing from you just as soon as the baby is born.  Typically the Dad will contact the studio within a day of the birth to schedule the newborn photography session.

Do I need to bring in props, like hats or baskets, to use during the session?
Only, if there is something specific you would like to use. We have a number of props to use during the newborn photography sessions.

Do you bring props to the session?
I photograph newborns with minimal props, and I prefer any props to be objects that have special meaning to you.   Please let me know if you have any personal items you’d like to incorporate.  Safety always comes first, so I don’t photograph babies in glass bowls or in positions that could be harmful.  That said, I do bring a selection of blankets, knit hats, and headbands.

My baby is already born.  Is it too late to schedule a newborn session?
No! While I generally book newborn sessions many months in advance, given the necessarily fluid nature of scheduling newborn sessions, I sometimes have last-minute openings.  Moreover, while I recommend that newborn sessions take place during the first two weeks of life, I am always happy to photograph older newborns with the understanding that it may not be possible to achieve the type of images that work with a very young newborn.

Where will my newborn session take place?
All newborn sessions take place in your home.

How long will my newborn session last?
Newborn sessions are anywhere from two to four hours long.

What can I expect from my session?
My newborn sessions are unique because we capture both documentary images along with a few more traditional posed images of your newborn.  When we arrive at your house we will assess the lighting and determine the best locations for photos.  The baby’s needs then dictate the flow of the session.

What can I do to help my session go smoothly?
The most important thing you can do is relax.  Beyond that, we recommend that you try to keep your newborn awake for an hour prior to the session, and that you feed your baby just prior to my arrival.  If you are breast feeding, it is best to keep a bottle of expressed milk on hand for use during the session.  Pacifiers are also extremely helpful for allowing me to calm your baby during the session.

Do you include family photos with a newborn session?
Yes, unless you request otherwise, I always aim to capture images of newborns with their parents and siblings.  However, please keep in mind that young siblings (under 4) may not want to be photographed with their new brother or sister.  I will do my best to capture images of your newborn with their toddler or pre-school aged sibling.

What should we wear?
Simple is best.  We photograph newborns wearing nothing at all or with minimal clothing.  If you have special outfits you would like your newborn to wear, we will be happy to accommodate, but keep in mind that numerous clothing changes can be disruptive to newborns.  We recommend that the rest of the family wear clothing that coordinates without matching exactly. Kids should wear clothes that they like and in which they are comfortable, although it is generally best to avoid busy patterns and logos.  We will be happy to work with you to select clothing for your session, and will also accommodate clothing changes if you’d like a variety of looks.

How many proofs can I expect to receive, and when will I receive my proofs?
You will receive minimum of 30 images in your gallery, often more.  Your galleries will be available for review approximately two weeks after a session.

Do you photograph in both color and black and white?
Yes.  However, unless you request otherwise, the proofs in your gallery will be shown only in color.  When you purchase a digital file you will receive a black and white copy of each image at no additional charge if requested in advance.

Do you sell digital files?
Yes, We currently offer a several digital packages, which may be purchased alone or in addition to prints.

How long do you retain the digital negatives for my images?
Any unordered images will be deleted six months after your order is finalized.

Can I request certain poses or shots I’ve seen on other photography sites?
Yes, you can. We will make every attempt to get you what you want in terms of poses; however there are certain poses that in my own opinion, are unsafe and pose harm to the baby. These poses, we will not do. Again, baby is my number one priority.

How do we book you?
Simply let me know you would like to book a photo shoot session, what dates work best for you and what type of session you are looking for through my contact page or email me at memories@newbornphotography.in.

Do you only offer the photos on USB or do you offer prints?
The price listed includes the price of all of the photos on USB / CD and certain prints, if you are interested in having prints made we are happy to help you with that. We do order prints from outside professional printers and vendors, if you are interested in ordering prints we can discuss sizes and prices that work best for you.

Do you provide any props for the session?
All props, including an abundance of hats, blankets, wraps, headbands, beanies, throws, crowns, wings, baskets, buckets, bowls, wagons and much, much more are provided to personally stylize your session just for you. Though there is nothing that you need to bring for your baby, if there is something special you’d like to incorporate into the session, just let us know.

What happens after the shoot?
We will make the initial edits before presenting you with the best images within 1-2 weeks of the shoot date. Low Resolution Images will be uploaded to a Drop-box gallery for you. Once your selection has been made your images will be fully retouched and the HQ High resolution images will be made available for download. You can also opt for Photo Books at an additional charge.
